Alan Stern , the spacecraft was launched in with the primary mission to perform a flyby study of the Pluto system in , and a secondary mission to fly by and study one or more other Kuiper belt objects KBOs in the decade to follow, which became a mission to Arrokoth. It is the fifth space probe to achieve the escape velocity needed to leave the Solar System. It was the fastest man-made object ever launched from Earth. The Jupiter flyby provided a gravity assist that increased New Horizons ‘ speed; the flyby also enabled a general test of New Horizons ‘ scientific capabilities, returning data about the planet’s atmosphere , moons , and magnetosphere. Most of the post-Jupiter voyage was spent in hibernation mode to preserve on-board systems, except for brief annual checkouts. This “wall” was first detected in by the two Voyager spacecraft. Appointed as the project’s principal investigator , Stern was described by Krimigis as “the personification of the Pluto mission”. It was later selected as one of two finalists to be subject to a three-month concept study, in June
She has identified some recurrent levers that play a core role in success and failure, strengths and pitfalls. These boil down to three major factors: Determinism, Ambition, and Resistance to Change. Over time, I have built a picture of what drives people towards their dreams and goals, and what pulls them away. Minimizing mistakes – and I say minimizing, because avoiding them completely is an illusion – involves reflecting in a structured way on our career and framing our decisions and behavior according to the vision we trace, adjusting it to the reality of situations we face.
We have to listen, reflect, plan, work and believe – always!

New Horizons is a program for Purdue faculty to pioneer new areas of scholarship. It is a competitive, West Lafayette campus-wide initiative that challenges faculty to create groundbreaking fields of inquiry that will place Purdue in the vanguard of new disciplines in the coming decades. New knowledge is being generated at an accelerating rate, leading to the emergence of new fields of study and new methods of inquiry as old paradigms give way to new ones.
Today we are realizing the endless frontiers of science that Vannevar Bush imagined in and the paradigm shifts that Thomas Kuhn described in , brilliant ideas that are as relevant today as when they were conceived decades ago. Pushing the boundaries of unexplored frontiers is a concept not bound to an era. It is a challenge for the ages. Our faculty are research-mature and entrepreneurial, understand the institution at a deep level, and are knowledgeable about its resources, challenges and culture.
Leading Change in a Complex World
Last week there was stark data that in cases of Covid per , population, Gateshead, Sunderland, South Tyneside and Middlesbrough are top of the leader board. As a nation we collectively toyed with the idea that Covid was a great leveller and then came to our senses, as the irrefutable evidence about the profile of those who had the virus and those who had died, presented itself. The most vulnerable and those with the least are being hardest hit by the virus itself, as well as being hit by the social and economic consequences of us handling it.
The first section of this introductory chapter, Working lives in the 21st Century, maps out key changes in the world of work: the issues that are pressing today and.
New Horizons is outbound through the Kuiper Belt, and two years ago today we discovered a smaller, more distant world that we could send it to. Likely an icy relic left behind from the era of planet formation, this world lies nearly a billion miles further from the sun than Pluto. It took years of effort from a dedicated team to find somewhere that New Horizons could visit after Pluto.
We scoured the southern skies with Earth-bound and space-borne observatories, battling poor weather, unforeseeable hardware faults, and the endless interference of the dense star fields of Sagittarius, at the very center of our home galaxy itself. What follows is a brief look back at that search, the discovery of MU69, and what it portends for the future of New Horizons and outer solar system exploration. It was even included as a component of the original mission proposal in that New Horizons have the capacity for exploring a more distant Kuiper Belt object, should one be found that it could reach.
That last bit was the catch — at the time that New Horizons was designed, assembled, and launched, there were no suitable Kuiper Belt objects known near enough to the path that it would take out of the solar system for it to reach one after Pluto. Because that area of sky is one of the hardest to search for Kuiper Belt objects. It lies in front of the center of our galaxy and is packed full to brimming with background stars. For every Kuiper Belt object as faint as MU69 in our images, there were tens of thousands of stars far brighter.
10 incredible details you probably missed in ‘Animal Crossing’
Just last year, Hai Cheng and others in Nature published the best-dated and most highly resolved record of glacial cold and dry to interglacial warm and wet climate oscillations from the last , years based on Chinese stalagmites. The climate-centred focus of Henderson is still relevant, and remains the most important facet of speleothem science, one which has still much to tell us about past and future climate states.
Yet, as we approach the end of the second decade of the twenty-first century, the comparison to ice cores seems less relevant, as the science of speleothems comes into its own and the breadth of cave science comes into focus.

The authors of a new book suggest that reading novels could sharpen their insights, while four academics consider how the field might need to change. Although both authors value the insights of economics, particularly at the micro level, they believe something has gone radically wrong with the discipline in its insistence on its scientific status and its reluctance to take into account other perspectives.
They came to this conclusion from opposite directions. Yet the policy led to people dying in protest riots, and increased the risk of widespread malnutrition.

Monday is Wednesday is Saturday. But when my friend Brian texts me for the latest gossip, I tell him that yesterday, just before midnight, I met a ghost on my island who gave me a bidet. That sort of unlikely exchange happens all the time in Animal Crossing: New Horizons , a cheerful and funny video game for the Nintendo Switch that has become a social-media sensation in the era of social distancing.
There is no kidnapped princess or planet on the brink of war, but you get to go outside, which is even better. Two weeks into quarantine and I’ve come to consider this a legitimately meaningful social interaction pic. With its low-stakes emphasis on making friends and decorating your house, Animal Crossing plays less like a traditional game and more like a lifestyle simulator.
Nothing is all that urgent in Animal Crossing, where the goals are breezy and can be put off indefinitely. That sort of sustained commitment is why I had resisted previous installments in the Animal Crossing franchise: As I grew out of my teenage years, I preferred shorter games that would more easily slot into my busy life. I downloaded Animal Crossing: New Horizons on a recent Friday night and named my island Akbar, in honor of the neighborhood bar my friends and I frequented before the quarantine.

Speciation of trace elements is the occurrence of an element in separate identifiable forms, i. Chemical speciation of trace elements is still in its infancy. Yet it is already clear that for us to understand the true interaction of trace elements with the biosphere it is absolutely necessary to know in which chemical form they are present. Simple ‘total-element determinations’ cannot help us any further, only ‘speciation’ will allow us to progress. This Thematic Network will consider species of the elements aluminium, antimony, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, nickel, platinum, selenium, tin, zinc.
The list may be extended. Strategies already exist to cover these different categories of species. However, during the experimental work for each particular element, species and matrix, many difficulties came to light.

If you’re like me, you’re probably spending wayyyy too much time in Animal Crossing. But honestly, is there really such a thing? Aside from protecting us from the apocalyptic hell of the real world , Animal Crossing: New Horizons is also chock full of thoughtful, little details that you notice the more you play. So we gathered some of our absolute favorite observations of the adorable stuff that make the world and the villagers who populate it feel so alive. Of course, you can’t really “spoil” Animal Crossing per se.
But some people might want to find all this magic themselves on their own time. Well, OK, only kinda. I’m not sure the turtles know or even like being viewed as your “pet. This weekend I caught a snapping turtle. Her name is Meredith. We have picnics now. One Redditor even claims that their villager was reading to one said pet turtle, though it might just look that way in the shot.
